New Holland NH 3098 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): CAN TSC1_TE Control - SOURCE LOW / Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-TE (When Active)
Issue description
A J1939 CAN bus communication error indicating that the engine controller has stopped receiving the required torque/speed command messages from the vehicle/transmission controller over the CAN bus, or that the CAN circuit voltage has dropped unexpectedly (Source Low).

Check the cause
Check for related codes: 3099 (NO SIGNAL), 3096 (ECM Bus Off on Vehicle CAN), or 3097 (ECM Bus Off on Engine private CAN) to determine if it is a true hardware failure.
Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wiring between the Engine ECU and the VCM/XCM for shorts to ground.
Check terminating resistors across the CAN bus with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms).
Verify the VCM/XCM is receiving proper battery voltage and has a clean ground to ensure it is not dropping offline.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate Modules
Locate the Engine ECU (usually mounted on or near the engine block) and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM/XCM, usually located in the cab or under the side console).
Inspect Connectors
Disconnect the main harness connectors at both modules. Inspect the pins for fretting, corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with electronic contact cleaner if necessary.
Test Wiring Continuity
Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN wires between the ECU and VCM. Test for continuity end-to-end, and test for shorts to ground or shorts to power.
Repair Harness
If a short to ground is found (aligning with the "SOURCE LOW" description), locate the chafed wire in the harness and repair it using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the affected harness section.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all modules, reconnect the battery, and use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and operate it under load to verify that the TSC1-TE CAN messages are successfully being transmitted and the code does not return.
