New Holland NH 3110 – Engine ECU (Engine Control Module): Monitoring of rail pressure relief valve - ABOVE NORMAL
Issue description
Fuel pressure within the common rail has exceeded the maximum safe operating limit, or the rail pressure sensor is reading an offset value that is abnormally high. The mechanical Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) is forced open to protect the fuel system, typically derating the engine and illuminating the system warning lamp.

Check the cause
Check for related codes: Look for associated codes like 3106 (PRV did not open after shock) or 3112 (Rail pressure signal above range max).
Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and pins at the Rail Pressure Sensor and the Engine ECU for shorts to battery, shorts to ground, or corrosion.
Fuel Quality and Filter Check: Ensure fuel filters are not restricted and there is no severe fuel contamination, which can cause the Electronic Pressure Regulator (EPR) or metering unit to stick and spike rail pressure.
PRV Leak-Down Test: Disconnect the fuel return line from the Rail Pressure Relief Valve. If a significant amount of fuel is bypassing the valve at idle, the valve has 'popped' and is stuck open or weakened, requiring replacement.
Sensor Output Test: Use a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST) to monitor the rail pressure sensor output at key-on, engine-off (KOEO). If it reads high pressure when the system is depressurized, the sensor is faulty.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and wait at least 10 minutes for the high-pressure fuel system to naturally depressurize.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the fuel rail, the pressure sensor, and the relief valve area. Microscopic contamination can destroy common rail injectors.
Remove the Faulty Component
If replacing the PRV: Disconnect the plastic return tube assembly from the fuel manifold. Securely seal the end of the tube to prevent air/dirt ingress. Unscrew the PRV from the fuel rail. If replacing the Sensor: Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector and unscrew the sensor from the rail.
Install the New Part
Thread the new PRV or Rail Pressure Sensor into the fuel rail and torque strictly to the OEM specification found in your specific engine's service manual.
Reassemble
Reconnect the fuel return line (for the PRV) or the electrical connector (for the sensor).
Prime the System
Turn the key to the ON position to allow the low-pressure lift pump to prime the system. Check for leaks.
Reset ECU Data
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the engine configuration menu and select 'Replacement of the Rail Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) – Reset ECU Data.' Click 'RESET' to clear the adaptation values and erase the inactive fault codes.
