New Holland NH 3114 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Main relay defect - BELOW NORMAL

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the voltage or signal on the circuit for Main Relay 1 is below the normal operating threshold, indicating that the power supply circuit feeding the high-pressure fuel pump's metering unit is shorted to ground.

   Perform a relay swap test by swapping Main Relay 1 with a known-good relay of the same type (e.g., lighting or horn relay) to see if the fault clears.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the relay panel to the fuel metering unit for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the engine block or chassis.

   Disconnect the plug at the fuel metering unit and check for fluid intrusion, corrosion, or melted pins that could bridge the power supply to ground.

   With the harness disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the power supply wire.

   Test the fuel metering unit itself to ensure the internal solenoid hasn't shorted to its own casing.

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the negative battery cable before performing electrical repairs to prevent further damage to the ECM.

   Replace the Relay

   If the diagnostic swap test proved the relay was faulty, install a new OEM relay into the Main Relay 1 slot.

   Repair the Wiring Harness

   If a short to ground was found in the wiring, cut out the damaged section of the wire. Splice in a new section of wire of the same gauge, soldering the connections and sealing them with marine-grade, adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing to protect against moisture and vibration. Secure the harness away from chafe points.

   Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

   If the short is internal to the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump, remove the mounting bolts, extract the old unit, and install a new metering valve.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a CNH diagnostic tool (or the machine's onboard display) to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the engine and verify that code NH 3114 does not return.
