NH 3116

New Holland NH 3116 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Main relay defect - SOURCE HIGH

Issue description

The control module is detecting an abnormally high voltage on the main power relay circuit. This typically indicates a short-circuit to battery voltage (12V+), a relay that is internally shorted/stuck closed, or an overcharging alternator feeding excessive voltage into the module's power supply circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Test battery voltage with the machine off and with the engine running to ensure the alternator is not overcharging (voltage should not exceed ~14.5V on a 12V system).

  2. Locate the Main Power / ECM relay, pull it, and inspect for melted plastic, a burnt smell, or internal rattling.

  3. Inspect the relay socket for corrosion, water intrusion, or melted pins.

  4. Use a multimeter to check the wiring harness between the relay block and the Engine ECU for a short-to-power (wire chafing against a constant 12V source).

  5. Ensure the ECU/VCM ground straps are clean and tight, as a floating ground can cause the module to misread source voltages.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts or spikes while working on the ECU circuits.

  2. Locate the Main Relay

    Access the main fuse/relay panel. Depending on the model, this is usually located under the hood near the radiator, on the firewall, or inside the cab fuse box. (On some models, the specific ECM relays are located on the left side of the fuel tank or radiator).

  3. Remove and Replace

    Pull the defective main relay. If the socket is corroded, clean it thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner and a terminal brush.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If your multimeter testing revealed a short-circuit to battery voltage in the harness, trace the wire from the relay box to the ECU, repair the chafed insulation, and secure it with wire loom.

  5. Install New Relay

    Plug in the replacement OEM relay. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the pins if the machine operates in wet/corrosive environments.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to clear the NH 3116 fault code.

  7. Test Run

    Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and the machine does not enter a derated power mode.
