New Holland NH 3120 – Engine ECU: Power supply for sensors - ALL OTHER FAULTS

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) supplies a regulated reference voltage (typically 5V, and sometimes 12V) to various engine and chassis sensors. Code 3120 triggers when the ECU detects a fault in this power supply circuit that does not fit the specific parameters for a 'Not Plausible' or 'No Signal' error. This usually indicates that the reference voltage is being pulled down or interrupted by a short circuit, an open circuit, a failed sensor, or an internal failure within the ECU's power regulator.

Check the cause

  1. Test ECU Output Voltage: Use a digital multimeter to measure the sensor supply voltage at the ECU pins or at a sensor connector (e.g., pin 8 of the UCM/ECU connector). It should read a steady 5V (between 4.8V and 5.2V).

  2. Isolate Sensors: Disconnect sensors on the 5V circuit one at a time (start with the PTO Twist Sensor, Fuel Pressure Sensor, and Boost Pressure Sensor). If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal upon unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Harness Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground or short to battery voltage.

  4. Check ECU Power/Ground: Verify that the main power and ground feeds to the Engine ECU are clean, tight, and providing full battery voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before repairing wiring or replacing the ECU.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short is found in the harness, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors. If a connector is corroded or melted, depin and replace the connector housing and terminals.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If unplugging a sensor restored the 5V circuit during diagnostics, remove the faulty sensor, clean the mounting port, and install the new OEM sensor. Torque to factory specifications.

  4. Replace/Repair Engine ECU

    If all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests perfectly for continuity and isolation, but the ECU still fails to output the correct reference voltage, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure. Remove the ECU and either send it to a specialized module repair service or replace it with a new/reman unit.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3120 fault code from the ECU memory.
