New Holland NH 3121 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU): PTO Torque sensor open circuit

The control module has lost the electrical signal from the Power Take-Off (PTO) torque sensor. The system detects infinite resistance (an open circuit), which is typically caused by a disconnected plug, a severed wire in the harness, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness connection directly at the PTO torque/twist sensor for unplugged connectors, snagged wires, or physical damage from field debris.

   Inspect the 3-pin connector for the sensor, looking for severe corrosion, moisture ingress, or pins that have backed out of the plastic housing.

   Using a multimeter, check the continuity of the signal, reference voltage, and ground wires from the sensor connector back to the Engine ECU harness to isolate whether the open circuit is in the wiring or the sensor itself.

   Resolve Wiring Faults

   If the diagnostic tests reveal a broken wire or damaged connector, splice in a new connector pigtail or repair the harness wire.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the harness has good continuity and proper voltage/ground but the code remains active, the PTO torque sensor has failed internally. Remove the faulty sensor from the PTO driveline housing and install the replacement sensor.

   Perform Calibration

   Enter the tractor's calibration mode (often the 'H' menu on the display). Navigate to the PTO twist calibration screen (often displayed as 'Pt'). Press and hold the designated calibration switch (e.g., the downshift button) until the display alternates between 'Pt' and the new stored calibration value. Failing to calibrate the new sensor will immediately trigger fault code NH 3123.
