New Holland NH 3124 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Armrest Tractor Controller (ATC): Hand Throttle potentiometer 2 high error

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the second channel of the hand throttle position sensor (potentiometer) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold (typically near or above the 5-volt reference limit). This condition usually points to a short to power in the signal wire, a broken/open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the hand throttle lever assembly on the right-hand console or armrest for physical damage or debris obstructing the lever's movement.

   Disconnect the hand throttle potentiometer and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving a proper 5V reference and has a solid ground, as an open ground will cause the signal voltage to pull high.

   Check the signal wire for channel 2 for a short-to-voltage between the sensor connector and the ECU or ATC.

   Perform a sensor sweep test by back-probing the sensor or measuring its resistance while slowly moving the hand throttle lever to look for erratic jumps or a constant high-voltage reading.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand control console or the operator armrest to expose the hand throttle lever mechanism.

   Removal

   Disconnect the 3-pin (or multi-pin) electrical harness connector from the hand throttle potentiometer. Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips securing the sensor to the lever assembly. (Note: On some models like the Workmaster, the entire electronic throttle lever assembly is replaced as one unit).

   Installation

   Mount the new potentiometer or throttle assembly into the console and secure the fasteners.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the console/armrest trim panels. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Turn the ignition on. Because the ECU/ATC needs to learn the physical end-stops of the new sensor, you must perform a hand throttle calibration procedure via the tractor's instrument cluster or a dealer diagnostic service tool (teaching it the new minimum and maximum voltage values).

   Clear Codes

   Clear the NH 3124 fault code from the system and test the throttle response to ensure the engine RPM increases and decreases smoothly.
