NH 3129

New Holland NH 3129 – ATC (Armrest Tractor Controller) or Engine ECU: Hand Throttle idle switch high error

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the idle switch circuit that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected harness, a failed internal switch, or a short to a higher voltage source.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series
  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland TG Series
  • New Holland T9000 Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the hand throttle assembly wiring harness and connector on the armrest/console for pinched wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins

  2. Perform a voltage and continuity test by disconnecting the throttle potentiometer/switch, verifying the sensor ground is intact, and checking the idle switch signal wire for a short to power

  3. Use on-board diagnostics (Intelliview display or diagnostic menu d17) to monitor the live state of the switch; if it shows 'High' or 'Open' regardless of lever movement, the switch is likely internally faulty

  4. Check for companion codes (such as NH 3128 or NH 3130) which may indicate the entire throttle module or its shared ground has failed

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Assembly

Remove the trim panels on the right-hand armrest or side console to expose the base of the hand throttle lever.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the 3-pin or multi-pin electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Remove the retaining screws or clips holding the potentiometer/switch to the throttle lever linkage.

  5. Install the New Part

Mount the replacement potentiometer, ensuring the physical linkage aligns correctly with the sensor's internal sweep path. Secure the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassemble & Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in, reassemble the armrest trim, and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

Turn the key to the ON position. Clear the stored fault codes. Depending on the model, you may need to perform a throttle calibration routine via the tractor's diagnostic menu so the ECU learns the new minimum (idle) and maximum voltage values.
