NH 4001

New Holland NH 4001 – Armrest Module (ARU) or Remote Valve Module (DV Module): Signal of Aux-stick (AUX1) out of range low.

Issue description

The electronic control system has detected that the signal voltage coming from the paddle or joystick potentiometer controlling auxiliary remote valve #1 (AUX1) has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, or a complete failure of the potentiometer inside the control paddle/joystick.

Check the cause

  1. Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the AUX1 paddle/joystick to the Armrest Module for pinched wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs.

  2. Disconnect the AUX1 switch connector and check for bent, corroded, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify the 5V reference supply and ground at the switch connector. Test the signal wire while moving the paddle; if the voltage remains stuck near 0V despite good power and ground, the internal potentiometer is dead.

  4. Attempt to recalibrate the remote valves through the IntelliView monitor. If the controller cannot read the paddle's sweep, the calibration will fail, confirming a hard fault in the switch.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Controls

Remove the retaining screws on the SideWinder armrest console to lift the upper trim panel, exposing the remote valve switch modules.

  3. Disconnect the Switch

Locate the specific paddle for AUX1 (usually the first in the sequence, color-coded green or black depending on the generation) or the multifunction joystick. Unplug its electrical connector.

  4. Remove the Faulty Component

Remove the mounting screws securing the AUX1 paddle or joystick assembly to the armrest bracket.

  5. Install the New Part

Seat the replacement paddle/joystick, secure it with the mounting screws, and plug in the electrical connector.

  6. Reassembly

Reinstall the armrest trim panel and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

Turn the key on and use the IntelliView display (or dealer diagnostic tool) to perform an EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) calibration so the Armrest Module can learn the new potentiometer's neutral, maximum extend, and maximum retract voltage values.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Remote Control Valve Switch Assembly / Aux-Stick Paddle / EHR Joystick

Exact part numbers depend heavily on the specific tractor model, cab configuration, and whether the tractor uses individual paddles or a multifunction joystick. When ordering individual paddles, verify if the tractor has a 4/5 spool or 6/8 spool configuration.
