New Holland NH 4044 – Arm Rest Module (ARU): Controller Fault (Flash Memory)
Issue description
This code indicates that the controller's internal program memory (flash memory) is corrupt, unreadable, or has failed its internal register/checksum test. Because the operating software cannot be read properly, the controller will disable its functions as a failsafe, meaning the operator will lose control over the components managed by this module.

Check the cause
Voltage & Ground Check: Low voltage drops during startup can cause memory read errors. Verify that the tractor's batteries are fully charged and that the ARU is receiving a steady 12V supply. Check the ARU ground connections.
CAN Bus Communication: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ARU to the Central Control Unit (CCU). Look for damaged pins, loose connectors, or active terminators that may have broken solder joints.
Clear Codes via H-Menu: Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic H-menu (specifically the H8 menu for the CCU or H4 for the ARU) to clear stored error codes and EEPROM calibration values. Cycle the key to see if the code is a hard fault that immediately returns.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Plug the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop into the tractor's diagnostic port.
Attempt a Software Re-flash
Because the fault is specifically a corrupt flash memory issue, use the EST to attempt to re-flash (reprogram) the Arm Rest Module with the latest CNH software.
Verify Operation
After the flash is complete, cycle the ignition key. If the NH 4044 code clears and armrest functions (throttle, hydraulics, PTO switches) return, the repair is complete.
Replace the Module
If the EST cannot communicate with the ARU, the re-flash fails, or the code immediately returns, the physical flash memory chip on the circuit board has failed. The Arm Rest Module (ARU) must be replaced.
Install New ARU
Disconnect the battery. Remove the armrest cover panels. Disconnect the ARU jumper wiring harnesses and remove the faulty controller. Install the new ARU and reconnect the harnesses.
Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use the EST or the tractor's H4 menu to calibrate the new armrest controller, including the multi-function handle, hand throttles, and spool valve controls.
