New Holland NH 4126 – Primary Hydraulic Power System / Electro-hydraulic remote valve controller: Remote No.2 Unable to reach neutral

Issue description

The electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve spool for the #2 hydraulic circuit is failing to return to its center/neutral position when the operator releases the control, or the position sensor is sending a voltage signal indicating that the spool is out of the neutral position. This can be caused by physical binding of the valve spool, a broken centering spring, or a failed position potentiometer.

Check the cause

  1. Electronic Calibration: Attempt to run a hydraulic remote valve calibration via the tractor's display monitor. Sometimes the module simply loses its learned neutral parameters.

  2. Potentiometer/Sensor Test: Test the position potentiometer on the rear of the #2 remote valve. A faulty sensor will send erratic resistance/voltage back to the ARU, tricking the system into thinking the spool is stuck.

  3. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the 3-pin connector at the Remote No. 2 potentiometer for corrosion, moisture, or wire chafing.

  4. Mechanical Binding Check: With the tractor off and hydraulic pressure relieved, check if the spool is physically sticking. Debris in the valve body or a broken mechanical centering spring under the rear cap can physically prevent the spool from returning to neutral.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Hydraulic Pressure

    Turn off the tractor engine. Turn the key back to the ON position (engine off) and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

    Locate the rear remote valve stack. Identify Remote Valve No. 2.

  3. Replace the Potentiometer (If electrical)

    Unplug the electrical connector from the potentiometer at the end of the valve spool. Remove the mounting screws holding the potentiometer in place and remove the sensor. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the tang aligns correctly with the slot on the end of the spool. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Repair the Spool/Centering Spring (If mechanical)

    If the spool is physically stuck, remove the rear cap/pipe of the remote valve. Inspect the detent mechanism, balls, and the centering spring. If the spring is broken, replace it. Clean the spool and valve bore thoroughly. (Note: Valve spools are precision-matched to their specific valve bodies; if the spool is heavily scored, the entire valve section must be replaced).

  5. Recalibrate

    Once the repair is made, turn the tractor on and navigate to the hydraulic calibration menu to recalibrate the EHR valves so the controller learns the new neutral voltage value.
