New Holland NH 4131 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.3 - Switched to failsafe

This condition occurs when the electronic controller detects an anomaly in the 3rd rear electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve circuit—such as the spool not being in the neutral position at key-on, an implausible signal from the armrest paddle, or an internal valve fault. To prevent unintended hydraulic movement and potential safety hazards, the system disables the #3 remote valve and places it into a failsafe state.

   Check the EHR paddle/switch for Remote No. 3 on the armrest. Ensure it physically springs back to the exact neutral position and is not sticking.

   Turn the tractor off and restart it without touching any of the SCV paddles. If the code clears, the paddle may have been bumped during startup, or the switch is mechanically wearing out.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the cab to the rear remote valve block. Look for chafed wires, moisture ingress, or corroded pins at the #3 valve slice connector.

   Check the tractor's voltage supply to the EHR system. Low or erratic voltage can cause the valve to drop offline (often accompanied by codes 4132 'Under voltage' or 4133 'Over voltage').

   Attempt to run an EHR valve autocalibration via the tractor's diagnostic menu to see if the controller can successfully relearn the valve's neutral, extend, and retract set points.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits while working on the EHR system.

   Replace the Armrest Switch

   If diagnostic testing points to a sticking or electrically dead paddle switch, remove the armrest console cover. Unplug the faulty EHR switch for the 3rd remote, snap the new switch into the console, and reconnect the harness.

   Repair or Replace the Harness

   If the wiring at the rear of the tractor is damaged, repair the broken wires using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the EHR control valve wire harness entirely.

   Replace the Remote Valve Slice

   If the switch and wiring are good, the fault is likely an internal failure of the #3 remote valve itself. Relieve all hydraulic pressure, disconnect the electrical connector to the #3 valve slice, unbolt the tie-rods holding the rear remote hydraulic stack together, remove the faulty #3 valve slice and install the replacement electro-hydraulic remote valve. Re-torque the hydraulic stack tie-rods to OEM specifications.

   Recalibrate the System

   Reconnect the battery. You must perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the tractor's onboard display or dealer diagnostic tool so the ECU can learn the new valve's spool travel limits.
