New Holland NH 4139 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit: Rear Remote No.3 - Position Transducer Faulty
Issue description
The position transducer (potentiometer) on the #3 rear electro-hydraulic remote valve is sending an invalid, out-of-range, or missing signal. The controller relies on this potentiometer to know the exact physical position of the hydraulic spool. When this fails, the system cannot verify if the spool is in neutral, extend, or retract, often causing the controller to lock out the #3 remote valve and switch to a failsafe mode.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Locate the #3 rear remote valve block at the rear of the tractor. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector going to the potentiometer for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.
Voltage Check (5V Reference): Turn the key to the ON position. Disconnect the sensor and measure the voltage at the harness connector. You should see a steady +5 Volts reference signal coming from the EHR controller.
Resistance/Continuity Test: Test the potentiometer's resistance while manually operating the lever (if applicable/accessible). A healthy potentiometer should show a smooth sweep in resistance (typically between 100 Ohms and 900 Ohms depending on the pinout).
Harness Integrity: Check for an open circuit or a short-to-ground between the sensor connector and the EHR control unit pins. If a short or open circuit is found, repair the wiring harness.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the Sensor
Identify the #3 remote valve slice on the rear hydraulic block. The position transducer/potentiometer is mounted directly to the end of the valve spool housing.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness. Unbolt/unscrew the faulty potentiometer from the remote valve housing.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the replacement potentiometer onto the spool housing, ensuring the mechanical linkage/pin aligns correctly with the spool. Tighten to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.
Perform Spool Travel Calibration
CRITICAL STEP. After replacing the potentiometer, the EHR controller will not know the physical end-stops of the new sensor. You must perform an "Electro-Hydraulic Remote Valve Spool Travel Calibration" (often done via the tractor's in-cab display monitor or using the CNH Electronic Service Tool) so the system can learn the new neutral, extend, and retract voltage limits.
