NH 4140

New Holland NH 4140 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) control module: Rear Remote No.3 - Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral

Issue description

The electro-hydraulic system is commanding the third rear remote valve to return to its neutral (center) position, but the feedback sensor indicates the spool has not physically reached that position.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 Series (e.g., T7.175, T7.220, T7.270)
  • New Holland T8.xxx Series
  • New Holland T9 Series
  • New Holland T6010 - T6070 Series

Check the cause

  1. Stroke the valve back and forth manually or via the system to attempt to clear any debris.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running to the Remote No.3 valve. Look for rubbed, pinched, or broken wires that could interrupt the feedback channel to the EHR module.

  3. Check the sensor's feedback voltage to ensure it is reading correctly.

  4. Attempt to recalibrate the EHR valves using the tractor's instrumentation.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt Recalibration

Enter the EHR CAL screen on the tractor instrumentation. Stroke the valve back and forth to clear debris, then attempt to calibrate the valve. (Note: Special tool 380001903 is sometimes used to connect to the quick coupler for calibration).

  2. Access the Valve

If calibration fails or the spool is mechanically binding, the valve spool will need to be removed. First, remove the linkage/lever from the spool and clean the front of the valve.

  3. Remove the Spool

Unscrew the large pipe/cap from the rear of the valve. Pull the pipe and valve spool out the back of the valve body.

  4. Inspect and Reseal

Inspect the primary and secondary shuttle valves inside the remote valve. Worn or missing O-rings can cause severe hydraulic flow issues and binding. Replace all internal O-rings (later models use a backing ring on the O-ring for longevity).

  5. Replace Sensor/Valve

If the mechanical spool moves freely but the code persists, the internal position sensor (potentiometer) is likely faulty. Depending on the exact valve revision, you may need to replace the sensor or the entire EHR valve section.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reinstall the spool, tighten the rear cap, and perform the EHR valve calibration procedure before connecting any implements.
