New Holland NH 4141 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Remote No.3 Spool not in neutral at key on
Issue description
When the tractor's ignition key is turned on, the system runs a self-diagnostic check. The controller expects the spool position sensor for the #3 electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve to read a specific voltage corresponding to the 'neutral' (centered) position. If the sensor reads a value outside of this neutral deadband, the system logs this code and typically locks out the valve as a safety precaution to prevent unintended hydraulic movement at startup.

Check the cause
Verify that the physical control lever, paddle, or knob for Remote #3 in the cab armrest is actually centered and not physically stuck or obstructed.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the armrest controller and the #3 remote valve on the rear hydraulic stack for moisture, corrosion, or chafed wires.
Swap the electrical connection or the potentiometer from Remote #3 with an adjacent remote (such as Remote #2 or #4) and turn the key on. If the fault code changes to follow the swapped component, the potentiometer or sensor is faulty. If the code remains NH 4141, the issue is in the wiring harness or the controller.
Check if the hydraulic spool inside the rear valve body is physically sticking due to oil contamination, debris, or a broken centering spring.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle all remote levers to relieve residual hydraulic pressure.
Access the Component
Depending on your diagnostic results, access either the armrest control console (for the flow control potentiometer) or the rear valve stack (for the spool position sensor/valve body).
Replace the Sensor
If the potentiometer is faulty, remove the retaining screws, pull the old sensor, and install the new potentiometer. Ensure the mating surfaces are clean and the O-rings (if applicable on the rear valve) are seated properly.
Address Sticking Spools
If the spool itself is mechanically sticking, the #3 valve section must be removed from the stack. Disassemble the end caps, inspect the centering springs, and clean the spool. If the spool or bore is heavily scored, the entire valve section must be replaced.
Reassembly
Reconnect all wiring harnesses and ensure connectors are locked.
Calibration
After replacing EHR components, you must recalibrate the EHR system. Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic H-menu (or a dealer electronic service tool) to run the EHR calibration procedure. This teaches the controller the new neutral, maximum extend, and maximum retract voltage limits for the new sensor.
