New Holland NH 4154 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Remote No.4 Unable to reach neutral
Issue description
The system has commanded the 4th electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve to return to its center (neutral) position, but the spool position sensor (potentiometer) indicates that the spool has not physically reached the neutral setpoint. This is typically caused by a mechanically sticking spool valve, a faulty position potentiometer, or a wiring issue.

Check the cause
Check for related codes that might isolate the issue, such as 4153 (Remote No.4 potentiometer faulty) or 4155 (Remote No.4 Spool not in neutral at key on)
Perform a visual and mechanical inspection to ensure there is no external debris, ice, or physical damage preventing the #4 remote valve linkage/spool from moving freely
Inspect the wiring harness going to the #4 remote valve potentiometer. Check for 5V reference power, a solid ground, and ensure the signal wire is not shorted to power or ground
Access the tractor's diagnostic menu or use a CNH EST diagnostic tool to view the live potentiometer reading for Remote No.4. If the value is erratic, stuck, or out of calibration range, the potentiometer is likely the culprit
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the machine on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure.
Isolate the Valve
Locate the rear remote valve stack and identify the slice for Remote No. 4.
Test/Replace the Potentiometer
Disconnect the electrical connector to the #4 spool position potentiometer. Remove the potentiometer from the valve body. If diagnostic tests showed an out-of-range signal, install a new potentiometer.
Inspect the Spool
If the sensor is functioning properly, the spool itself is likely binding due to internal contamination or a failed centering spring. Carefully remove the valve slice, disassemble the spool, and inspect for scoring, metal shavings, or broken springs. Clean the spool and valve bore thoroughly. If heavily scored, the valve slice must be replaced.
Reassembly & Calibration
Reinstall the valve components and plug in the electrical connectors. Start the tractor and warm up the hydraulic oil. You must perform an EHR remote valve calibration using the tractor's instrument cluster or diagnostic tool so the controller can learn the new neutral, extend, and retract potentiometer voltages.
