NH 4156

New Holland NH 4156 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 - No EHR Control Messages

Issue description

This is a CAN bus communication error indicating that the controller is not receiving control messages or signals from the 5th rear electrohydraulic remote valve circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T6 Series
  • New Holland T6000 Series
  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland T7000 Series
  • New Holland T8 Series
  • New Holland T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor is physically equipped with a 5th rear remote valve (the controller may have lost its configuration or was incorrectly calibrated to expect one)

  2. Inspect the CAN bus communication lines between the armrest controls (EHR switches/joystick), the EHR controller, and the rear remote valve block for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion

  3. Test the 5th remote valve switch/potentiometer on the armrest to ensure it is outputting the correct signal and isn't suffering from an open or short circuit

  4. Check for accompanying voltage codes (e.g., 4160 Under Voltage, 4161 Over Voltage) which would point to a power supply issue rather than a pure communication failure

Repair steps

  1. Software/Configuration Fix

If the tractor does not have a 5th remote valve, connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) and reconfigure the EHR controller to disable the 5th remote option. Clear the inactive code.

  2. Harness Repair

If the tractor is equipped with the valve, disconnect the electrical connector at the 5th remote valve and at the armrest switch. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. Repair any damaged CAN high/low wires in the harness.

  3. Switch Replacement

If the armrest switch fails a multimeter continuity/resistance test, remove the armrest console trim, unplug the defective EHR switch, and install a replacement switch.

  4. Valve Replacement

If the wiring and switches are intact but the valve's internal module is dead (failing to send/receive CAN messages), the electrohydraulic remote valve section must be replaced.

  5. Recalibration

After replacing any EHR hydraulic components or switches, use the New Holland EST or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to perform a hydraulic valve calibration so the EHR controller can learn the new valve's neutral set points.
