New Holland NH 4159 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Control Module: Rear Remote No.5 - Neutral Set point

Issue description

The controller is unable to establish, verify, or read the neutral (center) set point of the spool for the 5th rear remote valve. When this occurs, the system typically disables the #5 remote and switches it to a failsafe mode to prevent uncommanded hydraulic flow.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T6000 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T7000 Series
  • T8 Series
  • T8.xxx Series
  • T9 Series
  • TSA Series
  • TM Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 4160 Under Voltage, 4161 Over Voltage, 4168 Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral) to determine if the issue is strictly electrical or mechanical.

  2. Verify that the EHR lever/switch for the #5 remote physically returns to the center/neutral position and is not sticking due to dirt or debris.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.

  4. Attempt an EHR calibration to see if a lost calibration memory triggered the fault before replacing parts.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Hydraulic Pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Clean and Re-seat Connectors

Disconnect the electrical harness at the #5 rear remote valve. Clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect it.

  3. Perform EHR Valve Calibration

Start the tractor and bring the hydraulic oil up to normal operating temperature. Enter the tractor's calibration menu and follow the on-screen prompts or hold the dimming/calibration button to initiate the EHR calibration countdown. The system will stroke the valves to learn their maximum extend, maximum retract, and neutral set points.

  4. Replace the EHR Switch

If the calibration fails and diagnostic testing isolates the fault to the cab control lever not sending a neutral signal, replace the EHR switch assembly in the armrest.

  5. Replace the Valve Section

If the cab switch is functioning but the valve spool is mechanically sticking or the internal position transducer has failed, the #5 electro-hydraulic remote valve section must be replaced.

  6. Final Calibration

Any time an EHR switch or remote valve section is replaced, you must perform the EHR calibration procedure again so the module can learn the new component's neutral set point.
