New Holland NH 4162 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Deflection Too Short

Issue description

The electronic controller has commanded the #5 rear hydraulic remote valve spool to move, but the feedback sensor indicates the spool did not travel the expected distance, or an electrical short has been detected in the valve's deflection coil.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 Series (e.g., T7.170, T7.220, T7.235, T7.250, T7.260, T7.270)
  • New Holland T8 Series (e.g., T8.275, T8.300, T8.330, T8.360, T8.390)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve for corrosion, physical damage, or a short to ground.

  2. Test the resistance of the deflection coil (proportional valve actuator) on the #5 remote to verify if it is electrically shorted.

  3. Check the spool valve mechanically. Debris, contaminated hydraulic fluid, or internal scoring can cause the spool to bind or stick, preventing it from reaching its commanded deflection.

  4. Verify the position transducer/potentiometer on the remote valve is functioning correctly and sending the proper feedback voltage to the EHR module.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure and disconnect battery

Relieve all hydraulic system pressure and disconnect the tractor's battery to ensure safety while working on the electro-hydraulic system.

  2. Locate #5 valve section

Locate the rear remote valve stack at the rear of the tractor and identify the #5 valve section.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the proportional actuator/deflection coil on the #5 valve.

  4. Replace actuator if faulty

If diagnostic testing confirmed a shorted coil or faulty actuator, remove the retaining hardware and replace the electro-hydraulic remote control valve actuator.

  5. Inspect and clean or replace spool/valve section

If the spool is mechanically binding, remove the #5 valve section from the manifold stack. Extract the spool and inspect the bore for scoring or contamination. Clean the assembly thoroughly. If the spool or bore is heavily scored, replace the spool or the entire valve section.

  6. Reassemble and reconnect

Reassemble the valve section into the stack, torque the tie rods to OEM specifications, and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Calibrate hydraulic remote valve

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and perform a hydraulic remote valve calibration procedure using the tractor's display or dealer diagnostic tool. This ensures the EHR module learns the travel limits of the new spool/actuator.
