NH 4164

New Holland NH 4164 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 - Open Center Position Not Reached

Issue description

The spool inside the 5th rear electro-hydraulic remote valve failed to physically reach its neutral (open center) or float position when commanded by the system, or the position transducer failed to detect that it reached this position.

Applies to these machines

  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9

Check the cause

  1. Verify Configuration: Confirm that the tractor is actually equipped with a 5th rear remote valve. If it is not, this code may be a configuration error or a 'Spare' placeholder triggering falsely.

  2. Check Oil Temperature: Ensure the tractor is up to operating temperature. Cold hydraulic oil (below 5°C / 41°F) can cause sluggish spool movement.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the wiring harness, connectors, and pins going to the No. 5 remote valve solenoids and the position transducer (potentiometer). Look for corrosion, moisture, or damaged wires.

  4. Mechanical Binding: Check for physical debris, dirt, or mechanical binding in the remote valve couplers and linkages that might prevent the spool from returning to neutral.

  5. Attempt Recalibration: Before replacing hard parts, attempt to clear the code and recalibrate the EHR system, as the system may have simply lost its position memory.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface away from obstacles. Apply the parking brake, block the wheels, and lower the hydraulic links. Disconnect any implements from the rear remotes.

  2. Clean the Area

Steam clean or thoroughly wipe down the remote control valve assembly prior to removal to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect Lines

Disconnect the electrical harness from the remote valve solenoids and the position transducer. Note: Mark or label the connectors to ensure correct re-installation. Disconnect the hydraulic pressure feed hoses and lift cylinder hoses from the valve slice.

  4. Remove the Valve

Using suitable lifting equipment to support the remote valve assembly, remove the base securing bolts and lift the valve stack/slice from the tractor.

  5. Inspect/Replace

Inspect the spool for scoring, sticking, or internal debris. If the spool is damaged or the position transducer has failed, replace the valve slice.

  6. Reinstallation

Install the new or repaired valve slice, torque the securing bolts to spec, and reconnect all hydraulic lines and electrical harnesses.

  7. EHR Calibration

The system must be recalibrated after repair. Install the diagnostic connector into the diagnostic socket. Ensure all EHR program switches are in the OFF position. Use the instrument cluster keys to navigate the menu to 'H1' and select the rear EHR symbol. When the lower central display shows 'CAL', depress the program switch for the corresponding lever to initiate the automated calibration process.
