New Holland NH 4166 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 - Output Stage Faulty
Issue description
The electronic controller has detected an electrical failure, such as an open circuit, short circuit, or a failed internal driver, in the output stage that commands the electro-hydraulic spool valve for the 5th rear remote.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- New Holland T7 Series
- New Holland T8 Series
- New Holland T9 Series
- New Holland MXM Series
- New Holland TM Series
Check the cause
Verify Equipment Configuration: Confirm whether the tractor is actually equipped with a 5th rear remote valve. If it is not, the EHR controller may be incorrectly configured, or a terminating resistor/harness loop for the 'spare' circuit may be missing or damaged.
Harness and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the EHR controller and the Rear Remote No. 5 valve. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the connector.
Electrical Testing: Measure the supply voltage and ground at the Remote No. 5 valve connector.
Component Isolation (Swap Test): Swap the electrical connector from Remote No. 5 to a known good remote valve (such as Remote No. 4). If the fault code changes to indicate an issue with Remote No. 4, the EHR controller and wiring are good, and the valve's electronic control head is faulty. If the code remains 4166, the issue lies in the wiring harness or the EHR controller itself.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Relieve Pressure
Relieve all hydraulic system pressure before attempting to service the rear remote valves.
Clean and Re-seat
Disconnect the electrical harness from the 5th rear remote valve. Clean the contacts with an approved electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and re-seat the connector. Test the machine to see if the code clears.
Valve Replacement
If the output stage driver inside the valve's electronic head has failed, the electronic control head or the specific remote valve section must be replaced.
Disassembly
Unbolt the tie rods that hold the rear remote valve stack together. Carefully separate the stack to remove the faulty Remote No. 5 section.
Installation
Install the replacement electro-hydraulic valve section with new O-rings. Reassemble the valve stack and torque the tie rods to OEM specifications.
Bleed and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and bleed the hydraulic system. You must then perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic service tool so the EHR controller can learn the new valve's spool travel limits.
