New Holland NH 4170 – EHR (Electronic Hydraulic Remote) Controller: EHR Control No. 1 not calibrated
Issue description
Spool travel calibration data for the #1 Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve is missing or out of range.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- T6 / T6000 Series (T6030, T6.140)
- T7 / T7000 Series (T7.220, T7.235, T7.250, T7.260, T7.270)
- T8 Series (T8.390)
- T9 Series (T9.390, T9.450, T9.560)
Check the cause
Check for Communication Codes: Verify if code 4190 (EHR 1 Offline Err) is also present. If active, it indicates a wiring harness failure or dead valve processor rather than just a calibration issue.
Clear Debris: Stroke the manual override lever on the valve back and forth to clear any internal debris or sticking spools before attempting electronic calibration.
Swap Test: Swap the wiring harness connectors between the #1 and #2 remote valve powerheads. If the fault moves to #2, the #1 valve powerhead/solenoid is faulty. If it stays on #1, the issue is in the wiring harness, armrest switch, or controller.
Repair steps
Secure tractor
Park the tractor safely away from obstacles, firmly apply the parking brake, and block the wheels.
Disconnect implements
Disconnect all implements from the rear remotes.
Turn off switches
Ensure all EHR program switches on the armrest are in the OFF position.
Install diagnostic tool
Install the Diagnostic Connector Jumper (OEM Tool # 380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic socket. (Note: On larger articulated models like the T9 or T7 AutoCommand, a pressure transducer tool, OEM # 380001903, must be connected to the quick release coupler on the valve block).
Turn ignition ON
Turn the ignition key switch ON.
Navigate to calibration menu
Use the instrument cluster keys or A-post display to navigate to the 'H1' menu and select the rear EHR symbol. The lower central display will show 'CAL'.
Perform calibration
Depress the program switch for lever No.1. The system will prompt you to stroke the lever to maximum extend, maximum retract, and neutral.
Retry calibration if needed
If calibration fails the first time, stroke the valve back and forth manually for a while to free up the spool, then attempt the calibration again.
Replace failed components
If the system refuses to calibrate, the EHR valve powerhead or the armrest lever potentiometer has failed and must be replaced.
