New Holland NH 4186 – EHR Control Unit or Central Controller (XCM): EHR Joystick potentiometer Y open circuit
Issue description
This code indicates that the main vehicle controller has detected an open circuit (a break in the electrical connection or a failed sensor) on the Y-axis (forward/backward movement) of the Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote (EHR) joystick.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the EHR joystick connectors and the EHR control unit connectors for loose pins, corrosion, or physical damage.
Potentiometer Resistance Check: Disconnect the joystick connector and measure the resistance of the Y-axis potentiometer across its sweep. Resistance should typically read between 100 Ohms and 900 Ohms depending on the lever position.
Reference Voltage Check: Turn the key ON and measure the voltage at the joystick harness connector. The controller should be supplying a steady +5 Volts to the potentiometer.
Harness Continuity Check: Turn the key OFF, disconnect the joystick and the EHR control unit, and check for an open circuit in the wiring harness between the two components.
Short to Ground Check: Test the signal wire for continuity to ground.
Repair steps
Access the Joystick
Remove the armrest or side console trim to access the wiring harness connected to the EHR joystick.
Inspect Connectors
Ensure the connectors are fully seated, not damaged, and that the pins are tight. If a connector is damaged, repair or replace the pigtail.
Test the Harness
If the visual inspection passes, use a multimeter to perform the diagnostic checks listed above. If the reference voltage is less than +5V or an open circuit is found: Trace the wiring harness back to the EHR Control Unit and repair the broken wire or replace the harness section.
Test/Replace the Potentiometer
If the harness has continuity and +5V is present, the fault lies within the joystick itself. Measure the resistance of the Y-axis potentiometer. If it reads out of limits (open circuit), the potentiometer or the entire joystick assembly must be replaced.
Reassembly and Calibration
Install the new potentiometer or joystick, reconnect the harnesses, and reassemble the console.
Clear Codes
Turn the key ON, clear the error codes from the instrument cluster/monitor, and test the joystick for normal operation. (Note: A joystick calibration procedure via the tractor's monitor may be required after replacement).
