New Holland NH 4187 – EHR (Electronic Hitch Regulation / Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit: EHR Joystick potentiometer Y short circuit
Issue description
The system has detected a short circuit in the Y-axis (forward/backward movement) potentiometer of the Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) joystick. The controller is receiving a voltage signal that is out of the expected range, indicating a failure in the potentiometer itself, a short in the wiring harness, or a connector issue.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- New Holland T8.xxx Series
- New Holland TG Series
- New Holland TG210
- New Holland TG230
- New Holland TG255
- New Holland TG285
Check the cause
Inspect connector C306 for pushed-back pins, moisture, or corrosion.
Check the lever potentiometer resistance: Disconnect the EHR control unit connector C306. While moving the joystick lever, measure the resistance between connector C306 pin 6 (PC59--Y) and C306 pin 1 (3220 O/LTG/S). It should read between 100 Ohms and 900 Ohms. Measure between C306 pin 6 and C306 pin 2 (B). It should read between 900 Ohms and 100 Ohms.
Check for +5 Volts reference: Turn the ignition key ON. Measure the voltage between connector C306 pin 1 and C306 pin 2. It should be approximately +5 Volts.
Check for an open circuit: Turn the ignition key OFF. Disconnect harness connectors C324 and C325. Check continuity between C324 pin 23 and C306 pin 2, and between C325 pin 17 and C306 pin 1.
Check for a short to ground: Measure continuity between connector C306 pin 1 and a known good chassis ground.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and locate the EHR joystick control unit on the armrest console.
Harness Inspection & Repair
Based on the diagnostic checks above, if the voltage is incorrect, or if an open circuit/short to ground is found, locate the damaged section of the wiring harness. Repair or replace the affected wiring and re-test.
Potentiometer Replacement
If the wiring harness tests perfectly (delivering ~5V with no shorts or opens) but the resistance values of the lever potentiometer are out of the 100-900 Ohm specification, the potentiometer has failed internally.
Component Swap
Remove the faulty EHR control unit / joystick assembly from the armrest and install the replacement unit.
Verification
Reconnect all harnesses, turn the key ON, clear the stored fault codes, and operate the joystick through its full Y-axis range to ensure the code does not return and the hydraulics respond correctly.
