NH 5005

New Holland NH 5005 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Rear PTO Control System: Rear PTO brake switch – open circuit

Issue description

The control module is not detecting the expected electrical continuity or voltage return from the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) brake switch circuit. An open circuit typically points to a disconnected plug, a severed wire in the harness, a blown fuse, or an internal failure (break) within the switch itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the rear PTO brake switch and connector for unplugged connectors, backed-out pins, or heavy corrosion

  2. Use a multimeter to perform a harness continuity test between the switch and the control module to check for a broken wire

  3. Verify that the circuit is receiving 12V power to rule out a blown fuse or a break further up the harness

  4. Unplug the switch and test it directly with a multimeter for internal continuity when actuated; if it reads open (infinite resistance) when it should be closed, the switch has failed

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Switch

Find the rear PTO brake switch (typically located near the rear PTO housing, transmission distribution block, or linkage, depending on the model).

  2. Disconnect the Harness

Carefully unclip the electrical connector from the switch.

  3. Remove the Faulty Switch

Unbolt or unscrew the defective switch from its mounting point.

  4. Install the Replacement

Thread or bolt the new OEM switch into place. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the switch housing.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the tractor on, clear the inactive NH 5005 fault code from the dashboard/display, and engage the PTO to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
