NH 5033

New Holland NH 5033 – Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Record (EHR) controller, Armrest module, or Cab controller (XCM): Rear PTO cab N/C switch open circuit

Issue description

The tractor's control system is detecting an open circuit on the Normally Closed (N/C) contact of the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) switch located in the cab. Because the PTO switch acts as a critical safety interlock, the system expects the N/C circuit to be closed when the PTO is disengaged. An open circuit error suggests there is a break in the wiring, a disconnected plug, or an internal mechanical failure within the switch itself.

Check the cause

  1. Locate and inspect the rear PTO cab switch connector (often designated as connector C116) and the PTO clutch solenoid connector.

  2. Ensure the connectors are fully seated, not damaged, and that the terminal pins are tight and in the correct position.

  3. If the connectors are secure, disconnect the rear PTO cab switch connector.

  4. Using a digital multimeter, check the continuity across the component side of the switch terminals while manually operating the switch to verify if the internal contacts have failed.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the cab switch and the controller for any breaks, chafing, or shorts to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical work to prevent short circuits.

  2. Access switch

Access the rear PTO switch located in the cab console or armrest. It is recommended to take a photo of the wire connections before removing the old switch.

  3. Disconnect wiring

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the back of the switch.

  4. Remove switch

Remove the faulty switch from its mounting location in the console.

  5. Install new switch

Install the new OEM replacement switch into the console.

  6. Reconnect wiring

Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch, ensuring the 3-pin connector is fully seated and locked.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Test PTO

Start the tractor and test the PTO engagement to ensure the fault code is cleared and the PTO operates safely and correctly.
