NH 5034

New Holland NH 5034 – ECM / EHR: Rear fender PTO switch open / short to ground

Issue description

This fault code indicates a circuit failure related to the external Power Take-Off (PTO) control switch mounted on the rear fender. The system has detected that the electrical circuit for this switch is either broken (open circuit) or the wiring has shorted out to the tractor's chassis/ground.

Applies to these machines

  • T5 Series
  • T5.105
  • T5.115
  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • TM Series
  • TM120
  • TM175
  • TM190
  • TS Series
  • TSA Series
  • TL Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the rear fender PTO switch for physical damage, stuck buttons, or moisture/dirt ingress.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the fender switch back to the ECM/EHR. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the fender or chassis, or corrosion at the connectors.

  3. Disconnect the switch and test it for continuity to verify if the switch itself is internally open or shorted to ground.

  4. Test the harness side of the connector for proper voltage and ensure there is no continuity to ground on the signal wire.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent any electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the Switch

Locate the faulty PTO switch on the rear mudguard/fender and disconnect its electrical connector.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed or broken wires in the fender harness, splice and repair the wiring using weatherproof heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  4. Replace the Switch

If the switch failed the continuity test, unclip or unbolt the switch from the fender housing and install the new replacement switch.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Plug the wiring harness back into the new switch and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  6. Clear Fault Codes

Clear the inactive fault code from the ECM. (Note: On some models like the T5, this is done by entering the "HH" programs on the control panel, selecting the "H3" program, entering the ECR, and clearing the codes).

  7. Operational Test

Test the PTO engagement and disengagement using the new fender switch to confirm the repair.
