New Holland NH 5036 – Transmission Controller, EHR module, or PTO Management ECU: PTO failure to Start
Issue description
The Power Take-Off (PTO) system was commanded to engage by the operator, but the system failed to execute the start sequence. This is usually a control-side failure stemming from electrical switches, wiring, relays, safety interlocks, hydraulic pressure supply, or the control solenoid/valve.

Check the cause
Check battery voltage under load and inspect ground straps, as electrical weakness is a common cause of false codes and engagement failures
Verify that safety interlocks (seat switch, clutch switch, and brake switches) are functioning and sending the 'safe' signal to the ECU
Test both the cab engagement switch and the rear fender PTO switch for correct voltage and continuity
Inspect the main connector blocks and wiring harness for corrosion, chafing, or rodent damage
Check the PTO control solenoid for electrical faults and verify that the control valve is building adequate hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch pack
Repair steps
Resolve Baseline Electrical Issues
Put the battery on a charger overnight and test the voltage under crank/load. Clean all ground connections to the chassis and ECU. Clear the code and re-test.
Test and Replace Switches
Use a multimeter to test the cab PTO switch and the rear fender switch. If either switch is open, shorted to ground, or showing incorrect voltage, replace the faulty switch.
Inspect the Control Valve O-Rings
Remove the PTO control valve. Replace the internal O-rings and reinstall the valve.
Replace the PTO Solenoid
If the wiring to the solenoid is intact but the solenoid does not actuate when the PTO switch is pressed, replace the PTO control solenoid.
Rebuild the PTO Clutch (Mechanical Failure)
If all electrical, safety, and hydraulic valve checks pass, the mechanical PTO clutch pack has likely failed. Access the PTO clutch housing, remove the worn clutch discs and separator plates, and install a new PTO clutch kit.
