NH 5041

New Holland NH 5041 – Transmission Controller (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM/XCM): PTO disengaged due to assuasive load ( not used )

Issue description

This code indicates a theoretical condition where the Power Take-Off (PTO) system has been disengaged by the controller due to an excessive (assuasive) load. However, the '( not used )' designation means the code is a placeholder, deprecated, or not actively implemented in the machine's software logic. It is typically a 'phantom code' caused by a software glitch, a firmware bug, or erratic behavior triggered by a different failing component.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T6000
  • New Holland T7000
  • New Holland TM-series
  • New Holland TS-A series

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active PTO-related codes (such as NH 5042 or NH 5099) that might be causing the ECU to behave erratically

  2. Clear the code from the system and operate the PTO under a normal load to see if the code returns

  3. Verify the current firmware version of the Transmission/PTO controller

  4. Inspect the wiring harness at the PTO management switch for chafing, shorts to ground, or moisture intrusion (especially if accompanied by switch codes)

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Read fault codes

Read and record all active and stored fault codes in the Transmission Controller.

  3. Clear fault memory

If NH 5041 is the only code present, clear the fault memory.

  4. Retest PTO

Start the tractor, engage the PTO, and apply a load. If the code does not return, treat it as an isolated software anomaly and return the tractor to service.

  5. Update firmware

If the code immediately returns, check the CNH dealer portal (eTIM) for available software updates for the Transmission Controller. Reflash the ECU to the latest firmware version to eliminate the software bug.

  6. Test and replace PTO switch

If NH 5041 is accompanied by NH 5042 (PTO Management switch shorted), use a multimeter to test the PTO management switch for internal shorts. Replace the switch if it fails continuity testing.
