New Holland NH 7031 – Auto Guidance / Steering Controller or Tractor Control Unit (TCU): Steering angle sensor out of Maximum range

The sensor responsible for monitoring the angular position of the front steering axle is transmitting a voltage or position signal that exceeds the maximum limit programmed into the system. This typically disables auto-guidance (auto-steer) and precision farming functions because the system can no longer accurately determine the position of the front wheels.

   Inspect the steering angle sensor (usually located on the front axle kingpin or steering cylinder) for physical damage, loose mounting hardware, or debris interference.

   Check the sensor's wiring harness and electrical connector for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires that could cause an erratic out-of-range signal.

   Verify that the mechanical steering stops on the front axle are intact. If broken or misadjusted, the wheels may physically turn further than the sensor's maximum range.

   Use the in-cab display (e.g., Intelliview) to clear the fault code and attempt a steering angle sensor calibration. If the sensor is simply out of sync, a successful calibration will clear the fault memory.

   Park and secure tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface and manually center the steering wheels. Turn off the engine and remove the key.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the steering angle sensor on the front axle assembly.

   Disconnect connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove old sensor

   Remove the mounting bolts/hardware and extract the old sensor.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new steering angle sensor and secure the mounting hardware to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Navigate to calibration menu

   Turn the ignition on and navigate to the calibration menu on the tractor's display (or connect a diagnostic tool).

   Perform calibration

   Perform the steering angle sensor calibration. This typically requires turning the steering wheel to the full-left lock, then to the full-right lock, and returning to the straight-ahead position so the ECU can learn the new minimum, maximum, and center values.

   Clear codes and test drive

   Clear any remaining fault codes and test drive the tractor to verify that auto-guidance engages without throwing NH 7031.
