New Holland NH 9001 – Tractor Multifunction Module / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Hitch/Hydraulic Controller: Front HPL (High Pressure Lift) Potentiometer open circuit

The control module has lost the electrical signal from the position sensor (potentiometer) that monitors the height/angle of the front 3-point hitch. An open circuit typically means a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or a complete internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front hitch position sensor for snagged, stretched, or severed wires

   Disconnect the sensor plug and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion, then reconnect securely

   With the key ON, use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving its reference voltage (5V or 12V) and has a solid ground at the connector

   Perform a sensor sweep test by measuring resistance across the signal and ground pins while manually moving the hitch or sensor arm; infinite resistance (OL) indicates an internal open

   Preparation

   Lower the front hitch to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the Front HPL potentiometer. It is mounted on the front hitch assembly, typically connected to the rockshaft or lift arm pivot point via a small linkage rod or direct drive tang.

   Removal

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolts/screws holding the sensor bracket. Carefully detach the sensor from the mechanical linkage.

   Installation

   Mount the new potentiometer, ensuring the drive tang or linkage is correctly aligned with the hitch mechanism so it sweeps through its intended range without binding. Tighten the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.

   Calibration

   A new potentiometer will not work correctly out of the box. You must perform a Front Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's Intelliview monitor or diagnostic menu. This teaches the control module the new sensor's specific voltage values at the absolute 'fully raised' and 'fully lowered' positions.
