New Holland NH 9002 – Hitch Controller / Universal Controller (H3) / Central Control Unit (CCU) / Armrest Control Unit: Front HPL (High Pressure Lift) Potentiometer short circuit
Issue description
The signal wire from the front three-point hitch position sensor (potentiometer) is shorted to ground or to a voltage source, sending an out-of-range or continuous high/low voltage signal to the controller. This prevents the tractor from knowing the position of the front hitch, usually disabling automatic lift/lower functions and auto-calibration procedures.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the front hitch potentiometer for chafed wires, pinched harnesses near the front axle/hitch pivot points, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the plug for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion, which can bridge the connections and cause a short circuit.
Using a multimeter, check the signal wire for continuity to ground or to the 5V reference wire.
Test the potentiometer's internal resistance. If the sensor reads a dead short across its signal and ground pins while disconnected, the sensor itself has failed internally.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the front hitch to the ground (if possible) to relieve pressure, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
Access the Sensor
Locate the front hitch potentiometer, typically mounted near the front hitch rockshaft or lift cylinder linkage.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness. Unbolt the sensor housing and carefully disconnect the mechanical linkage arm that connects the sensor to the hitch.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the new potentiometer and reattach the mechanical linkage. Ensure the linkage moves freely without binding. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibration
Perform a front hitch calibration using the tractor's in-cab display (often accessed via the 'H3' or 'H8' calibration menus) or an electronic service tool. You will need to capture the new 'Upper Limit' (e.g., uxxx) and 'Lower Limit' (e.g., dxxx) voltage values so the controller learns the new sensor's physical range.
