New Holland R-PTO 5009 – Rear PTO Controller: PTO solenoid open circuit or shorted to ground or AD12vs2 voltage is low.
Issue description
The controller has detected a circuit failure in the Rear Power Take-Off (PTO) system. The electrical circuit to the PTO engagement solenoid is either broken (open circuit), shorting out against the chassis (shorted to ground), or the specific reference voltage circuit (AD12vs2) supplying the system has dropped below acceptable operating limits.

Check the cause
Inspect the external PTO solenoid wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or disconnected plugs.
Check the internal wiring connector where the wire passes through the rear housing, as exposure to hot hydraulic oil can cause insulation to rot.
Use a multimeter to check the PTO solenoid for proper voltage and continuity, and test the AD12vs2 reference voltage at the harness.
Ensure the tractor's charging system (battery/alternator) is functioning properly, as low system voltage can trigger solenoid and reference voltage dropouts.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the tractor engine, lower any implements, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Locate the PTO Solenoid
The solenoid is typically located inside the rear axle center section or on the PTO valve block. On some New Holland models, accessing it requires draining hydraulic oil below the dipstick minimum mark, removing the left rear wheel, loosening the fuel tank straps, and pulling the tank out slightly to access a round cover plate bolted to the side of the casting just in front of the axle trumpet.
Inspect and Replace Wiring
If the internal wire assembly is rotten or disconnected from the solenoid (a highly common failure point), remove the old harness and install a new PTO solenoid wire assembly. Ensure all connectors click securely into place.
Replace the Solenoid (if faulty)
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the multimeter continuity test, unbolt the faulty PTO solenoid valve from the housing/valve block and install the replacement.
Reassembly
Reinstall the access plate, reposition the fuel tank, and remount the rear wheel if removed. Top off any lost hydraulic/transmission fluid.
Test
Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes from the monitor, and engage the PTO to verify smooth operation.
