New Holland R-PTO 5016 – Rear PTO Controller: PTO speed is detected when the PTO is in the off state without engine RPM.

The tractor's computer is receiving a rotational speed signal from the PTO (Power Take-Off) shaft speed sensor, even though the PTO switch is commanded OFF and the engine is completely shut down (zero engine RPM). Because it is physically impossible for the PTO shaft to be spinning under these conditions, this code indicates a false electrical signal. This is almost always caused by a failed PTO speed sensor, a short circuit in the sensor's wiring harness, or moisture/oil contamination bridging the electrical connections.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the PTO speed sensor (located at the rear transmission housing) back to the main harness. Look closely at areas where the wires pass through rubber grommets into the transmission housing for degraded or broken insulation.

   Check the Connector: Unplug the sensor and inspect the connector pins for moisture, dirt, or hydraulic oil contamination. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Inspect the Sensor Tip: Remove the sensor and check the magnetic tip for heavy accumulation of metallic shavings from the transmission.

   Verify Sensor Gap: Ensure the sensor is seated flush. If it has backed out or is spaced incorrectly from the internal tone wheel, it can cause erratic behavior.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear transmission housing, typically mounted just above or to the side of the rear PTO stub shaft.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the exterior housing around the sensor with brake cleaner or a rag. This prevents dirt and debris from falling into the transmission when the sensor is removed.

   Remove the Old Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the housing, and carefully pull the sensor straight out.

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean hydraulic/transmission oil. Push the sensor fully into the bore until it is seated flush to ensure the correct gap from the tone wheel. Install and tighten the retaining bolt.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor until it clicks. Reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key to the ON position. Use the in-cab display menu or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored 5016 fault code. Test the PTO engagement to ensure the code does not return.
