R-PTO 5020

New Holland R-PTO 5020 – Rear PTO / CCH (Chassis Controller Hub): PTO configured as single speed but shaft size frequency detected

Issue description

There is a mismatch between the tractor's software configuration and the hardware signals being received. The controller is programmed to operate a single-speed PTO, but it is actively receiving a frequency signal from the PTO Shaft Size Sensor, which is only utilized on two-speed PTO configurations.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series (T8.320, T8.350, T8.380, T8.410)

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor is physically equipped with a single-speed or a two-speed PTO

  2. Check the controller configuration to ensure the PTO configuration matches the physical hardware

  3. Inspect the PTO Shaft Speed Sensor and PTO Shaft Size Sensor connections to ensure they haven't been accidentally swapped

  4. Inspect the wiring between the CCH and the PTO shaft size sensor for chafing, corrosion, or a short-to-power

Repair steps

  1. Correct the Software Configuration

If the tractor actually features a two-speed PTO but the CCH is configured for a single-speed, update the controller's configuration settings to 'Two-Speed PTO.' Clear the code and test.

  2. Swap Sensor Connectors (If Miswired)

If the tractor is correctly configured as a single-speed PTO, locate the sensors on the PTO housing. Check the wiring harness tags or wire colors against the service manual to ensure the speed sensor plug is not connected to the size sensor receptacle. If they are swapped, disconnect them, route them to their correct sensors, and plug them in.

  3. Repair the Wiring Harness

If the connectors are in the correct locations, use a multimeter to test the shaft size sensor circuit back to the CCH for shorts. Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact and the configuration is correct, the sensor itself may be internally shorted and sending a false signal. Replace the PTO speed/size sensor.

  5. Final Test

Clear the R-PTO 5020 fault code, start the tractor, and engage the PTO to verify the repair.
