New Holland R-PTO 5021 – Armrest Controller (ARU) / Tractor Control Unit (TCU): Auto PTO disabled (CCH Only)
Issue description
The tractor's control system has locked out or disabled the automatic Power Take-Off (Auto PTO) functionality.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- New Holland T8.xxx Series (e.g., T8.275, T8.300, T8.330, T8.360, T8.390, T8.420)
- New Holland T8000 Series (CCH configurations)
Check the cause
Verify Machine Configuration: Ensure the tractor is a CCH (Cash Crop High) model, as this code is exclusive to that configuration.
Check PTO Switch Position: Verify that the main PTO switch was not left in the 'ON' position while the engine was turned off (a common operator error).
Inspect the Auto PTO Switch: Physically examine the Auto PTO switch on the armrest console and remote fender switches for sticking, physical damage, or debris.
Check for Accompanying Solenoid Codes: Check the diagnostic menu for related Rear PTO codes (5023, 5024, or 5027) indicating solenoid circuit issues.
CAN-Bus Communication Check: Verify there are no communication loss codes between the Armrest controller and the TCU.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.
Access the Switch
Carefully pry up or unscrew the armrest control panel (or rear fender panel) to access the back of the Auto PTO switch.
Test the Switch
Disconnect the wiring harness from the Auto PTO switch. Using a digital multimeter, test the switch for proper continuity when toggled. If the switch fails to show continuity or is internally shorted, it must be replaced.
Inspect the Harness
If the switch tests good, inspect the wiring harness leading from the switch to the Armrest Controller. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or corroded connector pins. Repair any damaged wiring.
Address Solenoids (If Applicable)
If accompanying codes (5023/5024) were found, locate the PTO clutch PWM solenoid on the rear transmission housing. Unplug it and test the solenoid coil resistance. Replace the solenoid if it is open or shorted.
Reassembly and Clearing
Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's diagnostic menu (or a CNH EST diagnostic tool) to clear the stored R-PTO 5021 fault code.
Operational Test
Start the tractor and test the Auto PTO engagement under safe operating conditions to ensure the fault does not return.
