R-PTO 5024

New Holland R-PTO 5024 – Rear PTO module / Tractor Control Unit (TCU): PTO clutch lube solenoid open circuit or shorted to ground or +12 VF3 voltage is low. (4WD Only)

Issue description

This code indicates that the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) has detected an electrical fault in the PTO clutch lubrication circuit. Specifically, it means the circuit is either broken (open), shorted directly to ground, or the +12V supply voltage (VF3 circuit) has dropped too low.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series (T8 Series)

Check the cause

  1. Check the Power Supply (VF3 Circuit) at the fuse panel for a blown fuse, which would cut power to the solenoid.

  2. Visually and electrically inspect the wiring harness running between the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) and the PTO clutch lube solenoid for chafed wires, pinched lines, or loose/corroded connectors.

  3. Disconnect the PTO clutch lube solenoid and use a multimeter to check for internal continuity and resistance. Test the solenoid pins against the tractor chassis to check for an internal short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable if performing electrical repairs.

  2. Fuse Replacement

If the VF3 circuit fuse is blown, replace it with a fuse of the exact same amperage rating. If it blows again immediately upon startup, there is a hard short in the harness or solenoid that must be addressed first.

  3. Harness Repair

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the broken/shorted wire using OEM-approved waterproof splice connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Solenoid Replacement

If the PTO clutch lube solenoid tests faulty (internally shorted or open), remove the retaining hardware, extract the old solenoid from the PTO valve block, and install the new solenoid. Ensure the O-rings are lubricated with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid before seating the new valve.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic menu to clear the R-PTO 5024 fault code, and test the PTO system for normal operation.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • PTO Clutch Lube Solenoid (Valve)

Ensure you are looking at the lube solenoid specifically, as the PTO valve block contains multiple solenoids (e.g., engagement, brake).

  • VF3 Circuit Fuse

Amperage dependent on specific model year fuse block diagram.
