New Holland R-PTO 5028 – Rear PTO Controller: Clutch speed sensor open or short to Vbat

The controller is not receiving a valid signal from the Rear PTO clutch speed sensor. The system has detected that the sensor's electrical circuit is either completely broken (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorted directly to battery voltage (Vbat).

   Visually inspect the PTO clutch speed sensor (X15) on the transmission/PTO housing, connector, and wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Test for open circuit: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check for continuity on the signal, ground, and supply wires between the sensor connector and the PTO controller harness.

   Test for short to Vbat: With the key ON (engine off), probe the signal wire to ensure it is not receiving a full 12V battery voltage, which indicates a short in the harness.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage from the controller.

   Prepare tractor

   Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, the parking brake is engaged, and the key is removed.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the Rear PTO clutch speed sensor on the rear transmission housing.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

   Clean area

   Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

   Remove bolt

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

   Remove sensor

   Carefully pull the old sensor straight out of the housing (have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission/hydraulic fluid may seep out).

   Lubricate O-ring

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid.

   Install sensor

   Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

    Clear codes

    Power on the tractor and clear the stored fault codes.

    Calibrate PTO clutch

    A PTO clutch calibration sequence may need to be performed via the tractor's display monitor or diagnostic tool to allow the controller to relearn the clutch "kiss point" and synchronize the new sensor.
