New Holland R-PTO 5029 – Rear PTO Controller: Rear PTO Clutch speed sensor short to GND

Issue description

The electrical circuit for the rear Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch speed sensor is shorting to ground. When this happens, the controller sees zero voltage on the signal wire, meaning it cannot detect the rotational speed of the PTO shaft. The system will typically fail to engage the PTO or will shut it down shortly after engagement.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the PTO speed sensor (at the rear PTO stub/housing) back to the controller. Look for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires causing a short to ground.

  2. Check the Connector: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the electrical plug for water ingress, mud, or green corrosion bridging the pins.

  3. Multimeter Testing: Test continuity between the sensor's signal wire and a known good chassis ground while unplugged. If continuity exists, the harness is shorted. If not, the sensor is internally shorted.

  4. Verify Relays and Switches: Ensure the PTO engagement switch and relays are receiving power and functioning correctly, as cab electrical faults can mimic sensor drop-outs.
