New Holland SFA 10020 – Front Suspension Controller: Front Suspension piston Solenoid over current

Issue description

The control module has detected an abnormally high electrical current draw on the circuit that controls the piston-side solenoid of the front suspension valve block. This typically indicates a short circuit—either a short to ground in the wiring harness or a shorted internal coil within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the front suspension controller to the front suspension valve block for pinched wires, chafing against the tractor frame, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the front suspension piston solenoid and check for water ingress, dirt, or bent/corroded pins that could bridge the connections.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the piston solenoid coil using a multimeter. Compare to OEM specs (typically 5–15 ohms). A reading near 0 ohms indicates an internally shorted coil.

  4. With the solenoid and the ECU disconnected, test the signal wire for continuity to ground to verify if the wiring harness has a short.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate Power

    Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent accidental shorting during the repair.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the front suspension control manifold (usually mounted near the front axle). Identify the specific solenoid for the 'piston side' (refer to the machine's hydraulic schematic if the block has multiple solenoids).

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: If the coil and cartridge are a one-piece assembly, you will need to unthread the entire valve from the block. Have a catch pan ready for hydraulic fluid).

  4. Install the New Part

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the OEM torque specification.

  5. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn on the battery disconnect and start the tractor.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Use a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST) to clear the SFA 10020 fault code. Depending on the module's parameters, you may need to run a front suspension calibration routine to ensure the controller recognizes the new electrical values and restores full suspension travel.
