New Holland TMF 156 – Armrest Controller (ARU): Auto PTO switch stuck ON in Armrest Controller

The electronic control system is receiving a continuous, uninterrupted "ON" signal from the Auto PTO switch. This condition is typically caused by a physically jammed button, an internal short circuit within the switch contacts, or a short-to-voltage in the wiring harness connecting the switch to the controller.

   Physical Inspection: Check the Auto PTO switch on the right-hand armrest console. Look for dirt, sticky residue, or debris that might be physically wedging the button in the depressed (ON) position.

   Harness & Connector Check: Lift or remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness at the back of the armrest. Look for rubbed-through wires, pinched cables, or damaged pins that could be causing a short circuit to 12V.

   Continuity Testing: Unplug the switch and use a multimeter to test the switch contacts. If the switch shows continuity (closed circuit) when the button is not being pressed, the switch is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   CAN Bus Terminators: On older models (like the TG or T8 series), armrest switch errors can sometimes be triggered by failing CAN bus active terminators or broken solder joints on the armrest board. If multiple armrest switches are throwing codes simultaneously, inspect the terminators.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical surges to the Armrest Controller.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the retaining screws securing the right-hand armrest side console or operator control panel cover.

   Disconnect

   Locate the Auto PTO switch assembly and carefully unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the back of the switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Depending on the exact model, the switch will either be held in by a threaded locking collar or plastic retaining clips. Undo the collar or depress the clips and push the switch out through the top of the console.

   Install the New Part

   Seat the new PTO switch into the console until it clicks or tighten the retaining collar.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the 4-pin harness, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reinstall the armrest console cover.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the stored TMF 156 fault code using the cab monitor. Test the Auto PTO engagement to ensure the code does not return.
