New Holland TMF 157 – TMF (Tractor Management Function): PTO remote fender switch short circuit

The control system has detected a short circuit (either shorted to ground or shorted to a 12V power source) in the electrical circuit of the external Power Take-Off (PTO) switch located on the rear fender of the machine.

   Inspect the rear PTO fender switch, its rubber boot, and the connector for physical damage, moisture ingress, or heavy corrosion.

   Disconnect the fender switch and test the switch pins with a multimeter for internal continuity when the button is not being pressed (internal short).

   With the switch and the TMF/XCM controller disconnected, probe the signal wire in the harness for continuity to the chassis ground or to the 12V supply line to identify a rubbed or pinched wire.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to protect the control modules.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the wiring harness at the rear PTO fender switch.

   Replace the Switch

   If the multimeter test proved the switch is internally shorted, unbolt the switch assembly from the fender housing, install the new OEM switch, and plug in the connector.

   Repair the Harness

   If the switch is good, trace the wiring harness from the fender back to the cab. Look closely at areas where the harness passes through the fender well or frame, as debris or tire rub often damages the wire insulation. Cut out the shorted section of wire, splice in a new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery and the TMF/XCM controller. Turn the key on, navigate to the diagnostic menu on the display, and clear the TMF 157 error code. Test the fender switch to ensure the PTO engages and disengages normally without throwing the code again.
