New Holland TMF 162 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Engine Stalled when the PTO was running
Issue description
The software detects that the engine speed has dropped too low for the Power Take-Off (PTO) to remain in the ON state, or the engine has completely stalled while the PTO clutch was engaged.

Check the cause
Determine if the stall was operator-induced (e.g., engaging a heavy implement without clutching/throttling up, or hitting an obstruction).
Check for engine power loss and fuel starvation issues, such as clogged fuel filters, failing fuel pumps, or air leaks in the fuel lines.
Verify the Engine Speed Sensor and the PTO Speed Sensor for erratic signals if the engine did not actually stall.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the speed sensors to the TMF controller for shorts, corrosion, or open circuits.
Repair steps
Clear the Code
Connect a diagnostic tool, clear the TMF 162 code, and test-operate the tractor with the PTO engaged. If the code does not return, the issue was likely an isolated operator-induced stall.
Address Engine Power Loss
If the engine bogs down and stalls under normal PTO load, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters. Bleed the fuel system and test the fuel rail pressure to ensure the injection pump is operating within spec.
Test Sensors
If the engine runs fine but the code persists, use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to monitor the live data from the PTO Speed Sensor and Engine Speed Sensor.
Replace Faulty Components
If the PTO speed sensor or engine speed sensor drops its signal or reads out of range, replace the faulty sensor.
Recalibrate
After replacing sensors or resolving engine power issues, perform a PTO clutch calibration via the tractor's display or diagnostic software to ensure the TMF controller properly recognizes engagement speeds.
