TMF 164

New Holland TMF 164 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) / Armrest Controller: PTO shaft speed has not been detected within 3.6 seconds of being turned ON.

Issue description

The software commanded the PTO initial fill valve (solenoid) to engage the PTO clutch, but the PTO speed sensor failed to detect any rotation of the PTO shaft within the expected 3.6-second window. This points to a failure in the sensor reading, an electrical issue with the engagement solenoid, or a mechanical/hydraulic failure preventing the clutch from engaging.

Check the cause

  1. Check the PTO speed sensor and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  2. Inspect the PTO engagement solenoid (initial fill valve) and the PTO solenoid wire assembly. Ensure the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage signal from the TMF/Armrest controller when the PTO switch is turned ON

  3. Check the hydraulic pressure at the PTO clutch valve

  4. Inspect the internal PTO clutch pack for slipping or mechanical failure

Repair steps

  1. Inspect and Test the Speed Sensor

Locate the PTO speed sensor at the rear PTO housing. Use a multimeter to test for continuity and proper resistance. If the sensor is faulty or covered in metallic debris, replace it.

  2. Test the PTO Solenoid

Locate the PTO solenoid control valve. Test the coil resistance. If the coil is open or shorted, replace the PTO solenoid.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness

Check the specific PTO solenoid wire assembly (e.g., OEM 82013103 on older models) for breaks or chafing, which is a common failure point. Repair or replace the harness if damaged.

  4. Hydraulic/Mechanical Repair

If electrical components pass testing, attach a pressure gauge to the PTO clutch test port. Engage the PTO. If pressure is below OEM spec, rebuild or replace the PTO valve block. If pressure is good, the tractor must be split at the rear housing to rebuild the PTO clutch pack.

  5. Clear Codes

Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the TMF 164 code and recalibrate the PTO clutch engagement if necessary.
