New Holland TMF 168 – TMF Controller: PTO ON/OFF switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

Indicates an electrical failure, short, or data error specifically originating from the Power Take-Off (PTO) activation switch located on the operator's armrest console.

   Test the PTO ON/OFF switch for continuity using a digital multimeter to check if it is stuck open or shorted internally

   Inspect the armrest harness at the back of the armrest for broken, chafed, or damaged wires, especially near P-clamps

   Check CAN bus and controller connections on the armrest controller board for broken solder joints or failing active terminators

   Verify the overall Armrest Controller status to ensure it isn't going offline or failing entirely

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the tractor's battery before performing electrical diagnostics or repairs to prevent short circuits.

   Access the Armrest Console

   Remove the retaining screws and carefully lift the upper housing of the armrest console to expose the internal wiring and switches.

   Isolate the PTO Switch

   Disconnect the wiring pigtail from the back of the PTO ON/OFF switch.

   Perform Multimeter Testing

   Probe the switch terminals. If the switch fails to show proper continuity when toggled, it has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   If the switch tests good, trace the wiring back to the main Armrest Controller board. Repair any chafed wires. If the connector pins on the board are loose, the board will need to be repaired (re-soldered) or replaced.

   Reassembly

   Install the new switch or repaired controller, reconnect the wiring harnesses, and secure the armrest panel.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the TMF 168 code from the ECU and verify that the PTO engages normally without throwing the code again.
