New Holland TMF 170 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) / Armrest Controller: PTO ON/OFF switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

Both the PTO ON and OFF switches are being detected as simultaneously ON, indicating that one of the PTO switch circuits is shorted to 12 volts.

   Inspect the PTO ON/OFF switch on the armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or binding that could bridge both contacts.

   Disconnect the PTO switch and perform a continuity test with a multimeter to verify if it is internally shorted to 12V on both the ON and OFF output pins.

   Probe the wiring harness between the PTO switch and the Armrest Controller to check for a short to a 12-volt power source (B+) on the signal wires.

   Disconnect the harness from the Armrest Controller and check the PTO switch input pins to determine if the controller itself has an internal short to 12V.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the armrest console to access the back of the PTO ON/OFF switch.

   Test and Replace the Switch

   Unplug the switch connector. If your multimeter confirms the switch is internally shorted (sending 12V to both ON and OFF circuits), remove the retaining clips/screws, pull the old switch out, and install a new OEM PTO switch.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the switch is functioning normally, trace the wiring harness down the armrest to the controller. Locate the chafed or melted wire causing the 12V short and repair it using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing.

   Replace Armrest Controller (Worst Case)

   If the switch and wiring harness both test perfectly fine, the Armrest Controller has an internal board failure (shorted input driver). The controller will need to be removed, replaced, and likely recalibrated/programmed by a dealer.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the TMF 170 code. Test the PTO engagement to ensure the code does not return.
