TMF 171

New Holland TMF 171 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: PTO software fault condition detected.

Issue description

This indicates an internal logic error, software glitch, or communication failure regarding the Power Take-Off (PTO) system within the tractor's multi-function control module.

Applies to these machines

  • T8000 Series (T8010, T8020, T8030, T8040, T8050)
  • TG Series (TG215, TG275)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the TMF controller connectors and PTO speed sensor connectors for moisture ingress or corroded pins

  2. Check the 146M (Dual Speed Sensor) connector on the rear axle harness for moisture

  3. Verify the alternator's output at the 'W' terminal (dark green wire) for voltage irregularities or AC ripple

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Seal Connectors

If moisture is found in the TMF or PTO sensor connectors, thoroughly dry them with compressed air and apply dielectric grease.

  2. Install Sealing Plug

Install a specific sealing plug into the affected connector to prevent future moisture ingress.

  3. Software Update (Reflash)

Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the inactive codes and attempt a software update/reflash of the TMF controller.

  4. Module Replacement

If the EST cannot communicate with the TMF controller, the software update fails, or the connector pins are irreparably corroded, the TMF controller must be replaced and subsequently calibrated to the tractor.
