TMF 178

New Holland TMF 178 – TMF (Tractor Multifunction Controller): PTO speed sensor has been changed.

Issue description

The control module has detected a change in the physical sensor, its circuit characteristics, or its configuration parameters compared to what was previously stored in the module's memory.

Applies to these machines

  • T8000 Series
  • T8010
  • T8020
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • T8050
  • TG Series
  • TG215
  • TG275

Check the cause

  1. Verify recent service history to determine if the PTO speed sensor, PTO shaft size sensor, or TMF controller was recently replaced, disconnected, or serviced.

  2. Inspect the PTO speed sensor wiring harness for intermittent opens, shorts, or corrosion if no parts were intentionally changed.

  3. Check for accompanying codes (such as TMF 179, TMF 180, or TMF 175) which can point to a broader voltage issue, alternator problem, or a failing TMF controller.

Repair steps

  1. Visual Inspection

Locate the PTO speed sensor at the rear PTO housing. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for moisture, dirt, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner and reconnect securely.

  2. Clear and Retest

If the sensor was simply unplugged during other maintenance, clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST). Engage the PTO to see if the code returns.

  3. Software Update / Calibration

If the PTO speed sensor was genuinely replaced, the TMF controller may require a software update or a PTO calibration routine via the dealer EST to 'learn' and accept the new sensor's baseline parameters.

  4. Sensor Replacement

If the wiring is intact, no recent replacements were made, and the code persists alongside erratic PTO behavior, the sensor itself is likely failing internally and must be replaced.

  5. Controller Verification

If a new sensor and software update do not clear the TMF 178 code, the TMF controller itself may have a memory/processor fault and require replacement.
