TMF 180

New Holland TMF 180 – PTO Controller: The PTO is receiving signals from the Shaft Size Sensor on a single speed PTO configuration.

Issue description

The tractor's control system is programmed/configured for a single-speed Power Take-Off (PTO), but the controller is actively detecting a frequency signal on the input pin designated for the PTO Shaft Size Sensor. The shaft size sensor is only used on two-speed PTO configurations.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8000 Series
  • New Holland T8040

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor is physically equipped with a single-speed or two-speed PTO to check for a software configuration mismatch

  2. Check for accidentally swapped connectors between the PTO Shaft Speed Sensor and the PTO Shaft Size Sensor

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the PTO controller and the PTO area for a short circuit to another frequency-generating wire or a short to power

Repair steps

  1. Check Configuration

Connect the OEM diagnostic service tool (e.g., CNH Electronic Service Tool). Navigate to the PTO controller configuration menu. If the tractor has a two-speed PTO, change the configuration from 'Single Speed' to 'Two Speed' and save the settings.

  2. Inspect Connectors

If the configuration is correct, go to the rear of the tractor and locate the PTO sensors. Verify that the wiring harness connectors for the PTO Shaft Speed Sensor and the PTO Shaft Size Sensor are plugged into their correct respective ports. Swap them back if they were reversed.

  3. Test Wiring Harness

Disconnect the PTO controller harness. Use a multimeter to test the pin associated with the shaft size sensor for continuity to ground, continuity to other sensor wires, or stray voltage.

  4. Repair Wiring

If a short is found in the harness (often caused by rubbing against the chassis or transmission housing), repair the damaged wire and apply heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Clear and Retest

Clear the TMF 180 fault code from the controller memory. Start the engine and engage the PTO to verify the code does not return.
