New Holland TMF 4 – TMF (Tractor Management Framework): Hitch Raise Solenoid Failed Open or Shorted to Ground

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the hitch raise solenoid. Specifically, the circuit is either broken (failed open) or the wiring/solenoid has shorted directly to the chassis ground, preventing the electronic hitch controller from energizing the solenoid to raise the 3-point hitch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the TMF/Hitch Controller to the rear hitch control valve. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper that could be shorting to the tractor frame (ground).

  2. Check Connectors: Disconnect the plug at the hitch raise solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Test the Solenoid Coil: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the hitch raise solenoid. An infinite reading (OL) indicates the internal coil has failed open. A reading of 0 ohms indicates an internal short.

  4. Check Power Supply: Turn the key ON and command a hitch raise. Verify if the controller is sending the correct voltage (usually 12V PWM signal) to the connector.

  5. Check Fuses/Relays: Verify the power distribution box for blown fuses related to the 'Hitch raise solenoid source'.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Lower the 3-point hitch to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the Hitch Control Valve assembly, typically mounted at the rear of the tractor near the hydraulic remotes.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the Hitch Raise Solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Remove the retaining nut or cap screw at the end of the solenoid cartridge stem. Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the valve stem. (Note: You usually do not need to remove the hydraulic valve cartridge itself, which prevents fluid loss).

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut. Do not overtighten, as this can distort the coil.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid.

  7. Test and Calibrate

    Start the tractor and clear the inactive TMF 4 fault code. Test the hitch raise and lower functions. If the hitch behaves erratically, perform the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) / Hitch Calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor.
